In this iteration of Span 516, whose generic title is Hispanic Literatures and the Forms of Political Community, we will focus on the colonization of Earth and the management of its resources as the epistemic and literal ground on which modern political forms are built. The class traces a long temporal arc that stretches from the colonial era, when the extractive operations of the Spanish Crown established the basis of the global economic system, to the nation-state, founded on the ideology of modernization and the management of human and natural resources, and to the current predicament of the Anthropocene, an era that names the overlap of multiple crisesfrom climate change to the dimming horizon of human futurity. While invoking these historical categories, we will keep in mind that the conventional designation of different epochs is ill-equipped to address a problem that has been a feature of human existence all along: the interconnectedness among what Flix Guattari called the three ecologiesthe ecology of the environment, social ecology, and psychic ecology; that is to say, nature, politics, and subjectivity. The class will engage with a variety of cultural documents, both textual and visual, thatalthough created at different times and in different locations within the Hispanic worldspeak to the issues that coalesce around current debates regarding the Anthropocene: how to think about past and future from the standpoint of the slippery temporalitythe epoch without epochof the Anthropocene; how to speak about culture in light of the inseparability of culture and nature; and how to articulate a subjectivity that neither controls nor fully grasps its world. The contemporary and historical materials used in the course will be organized into thematic clusters dealing with metals, water, and soil as earthly matters that make possible the production of worlds and the circulation of cultures. Texts from the colonial period include Jos de Acosta, Guamn Poma de Ayala, Bartolom Arzns de Orsa, and materials from the 2010 artistic and research project Principio Potos. Modern and contemporary authors studied include Csar Vallejo, Miguel Hernndez, Concha Espina, Jos Mara Arguedas, Merc Rodoreda, Gabriela Cabezn Cmara, and lvaro Enrigue; we will also examine visual art by Carolina Caycedo, Abelardo Gil Fournier, Manuela de Laborde, Lois Patio, and others.

Illness Beyond Metaphors Illness beyond Metaphors: Latin America and its Medical Discourses. Same as LALS 502. Latin American letters have often invoked illness metaphors. The nineteenth century, in particular, in the midst of the growing pains of the new republics, was very prolific in the kind of discourse that compared the nation to the body and used these comparisons and the need to keep the body healthy and clean to promote social and economic policies. During the last decades of the 20th century, dictatorships frequently used the images of cancer or gangrene to justify the mass assassination of their opponents: a part of the body needed to be cut off to save the life of the patient. Important literary studies, such as those published in the late 1990s by Gabriela Nouzeille and Jorge Salessi opened the field to an in-depth analysis of how literary and political discourse about health reflected the ideological frames of the nation. There are, however, other ways in which Latin American writers address notions of health and infirmity, ranging from memoirs by doctors and patients to the cross-cultural perspective required in diverse communities, to poetry and fiction produced as a means of processing ones own illness. This seminar will analyze a variety of discourses around illness and health and the ways they test the limits of the conception of the individual, the community, and the nation.
