Who are U.S. Latinos/as/x/e? As of 2025, they number 68 million people, making up over 20% of the nations population. While some are recent arrivals, many more trace their ancestry in this country back generations. Yet as a group, they are frequently cast as newcomers, guests, or not truly Americans or part of the nations past. How long have they existed in North America? What is the historical relationship between the U.S. and the rest of the hemisphere? Why does it matter to include Latinos as part of US history? We will explore these & other questions, beginning with Spanish colonization in the 1500s and the encounters between Europeans, Africans & indigenous peoples in the Americas up through the northward migration of millions of Latin Americans over the twentieth century. We will consider the contributions U.S. Latinos have made in labor, politics, education, popular culture, & much more.

3 hours Art Against Authoritarianism This course will be taught in Spanish. It examines how the bodies of artists and activists become a political space when other venues are censored or suppressed. In this context, the body and performance serve as stages where the social fabric is recalibrated, and the relationship between the private and public spheres is redefined. Individual political bodies transform into a collective entity, challenging traditional forms of domination through innovative expressions of sensitivity and social interaction.

Visual Culture of Labor Same as MUSE 546. The Visual Culture of Labor in the Americas. This graduate seminar investigates the aesthetic forms and embodied practices of labor across the Americas from the mid-20th century to the present. The course examines how work, workers, and labor relations are represented, mediated, and experienced through the lens of diverse media, including photography, film, performance, public art, and digital platforms. We explore the role of the visible as both a mechanism that reinforces labor inequality, precarity, and dispossession, and as an active instrument for challenging these systems by reimagining the social value of labor. The readings in this course employ an intersectional approach, as we examine the intersection of gender, class, race, and ethnicity within local and transnational labor circuits. The course highlights workers self-representational practices as strategies of resistance, asserting the humanity and dignity of workers in the face of systemic marginalization. Ultimately, the course focuses on the visual as a critical space for understanding the complexity of the politics of visibility and the shifting conditions of contemporary forms of labor.
