Prison Movies This course examines American prison movies from the 1930s to the present, a genre that has both reflected and shaped public understandings of punishment, justice, and social order. Set in penitentiaries, prison farms, and chain gangs, these films offered a way to imagine the realities of confinement and the fraught dynamics between wardens, correctional officers, and people in custody. Recurring scenes of exploitation, cruelty, camaraderie, corruption, rebellion, and escape reveal the moral tensions and social anxieties surrounding extreme punishment. Prison cinema also provides a lens onto the prison system itself. The course traces how the genre evolved alongside rapid shifts in penal philosophy, public opinion, and cinematic conventions. Class sessions combine analysis of film aesthetics with readings in history, sociology, and film studies to explore how thematic and ideological concerns are conveyed through cinematic form.

Do It Again:Drawing/Repetition Do It Again: Drawing and Repetition Do It Again:Drawing/Repetition This interdisciplinary drawing course combines production, research, and discussion. It invites students to determine their own Itthe subject, question, or impulse they return to again and again. This is not an introductory course; it asks for thinking and making beyond the basics. Throughout the semester, we will investigate what the It is in do it again. One of artmakings ongoing challenges is learning what to say as well as how to say it: these are not separate. The what and the how go hand in hand. This will be an important focus of the course. Assignments, readings, field trips, and research will guide each student in developing a cohesive body of work that demonstrates both technical proficiency and conceptual depth. Questions well explore include: How can repetition be generative? How does again lead to discovery, refinement, or even productive accident? When does repetition become habit? What are its historical lineages? And what defines a body of workfor now, and for the long term? Art production is central to this course, in which the practice of drawing is used expansivelyfrom observational to conceptual, from textile to mixed media. This is not an in-depth techniques course, but, rather, an invitation for students to explore, analyze and produce again and again. Only this way can technical aptitude and ideas be honed. Making work (a significant amount), reading, and sustained dedication inside and outside of class are essential. Studio Arts Lab Fee $60.00 Flat Fee.

Text and Painting Text and Painting The interplay between image and text is as ancient as writing itself. From early plaques and artefacts, to modern advertisements, memes, and headlines, text and image shape one another across time. Yet, while painters tend to favor the visual, the ineffable, and the colorful over dry, literal, black and white paragraphs, there is a deep tradition of artists utilizing the written word as mark-making to reflect their own time, place, and conviction. In this class, we investigate the relationship between language and representation, exploring its complexities through group discussion and individual practice. We examine instances of image and text from ancient, modern, and contemporary makers to analyze their effects on the viewer. This foundation will help refine each artists conceptual framework and intent. Restricted to Art Education or Pre-Art Education or Art major(s). Studio Arts Lab Fee $75.00 Flat Fee.

Thinking of Death to Be Alive Thinking of Death to Be Alive This graduate-level seminar will examine how art serves as a tool for thinking of and with mortality. Art is understood broadly to include visual and material culture, literature, and music. The title, Thinking of Death to Be Alive, echoes Michel de Montaignes essay To Philosophize Is to Learn How to Die (c.1580), a meditation on how awareness of death deepens our capacity to live. Across histories, disciplines, and geographies, artists have reflected on deaths inevitability and mystery within the vast frame of cosmic time. Each death is particular; artists have given that particularity form, opening it to shared experience. We will study specific works that address death directly or indirectly through case studies, primary readings, and analyses. Art Seminar Lab Fee $40.00 Flat Fee.

Decarceration in Theory and Practice: Risk, Recidivism, and Public Safety This course is a collaborative seminar for exploring complex and contested topics in decarceration research. We will read and discuss studies on issues such as risk assessment, crime prevalence and prevention, recidivism, and public conviction registries, with particular attention to violent crimes and sex offenses. The focus is on conceptual analysis: grappling with evidence that is difficult to interpret, weighing competing perspectives, and considering the implications of research for policy and practice. Students are also encouraged to bring their own research questions or challenges to the group.
