Do you speak Spanish at home? Have you studied Spanish for many years? If that is the case, you may have had some moments when you have asked an instructor or a Spanish speaker a question about some quirky aspect of Spanish that received an answer that left you with more questions. In this course, we will provide answers for those questions by exploring the sounds of Spanish and their properties, the way in which meaning is conveyed, and the way in which words and sentences are formed. We will also look at how Spanish is used by different speech communities in different contexts as well as how it is learned by children and adults.

"Foodie Spain: A Cultural History of Hispanic Gastronomy from Islamic Al-Andalus to Colonial Mexico" This course is taught in English. Spains history can be told through its foodconsumed via the very flavors and recipes that span ancient Iberia to the present day. Indeed, where conventional histories are seasoned by kings and conquerors, Spanish gastronomy serves up a historyor historieswhere race, religion, gender, and social class take center plate. Medieval Iberias Muslims and Jews not only influenced the peninsulas cuisine long after the expulsion of these populations, but also rendered certain ingredients and dishes socially suspect. The Spanish Empires colonization of the Americas and parts of the Pacific brought with it new products and foodstuffs, yet also a new host of political questions. And whether at the marketplace or in the royal kitchen, the question of who did the cooking always left a gendered aftertaste. On our gastronomic tour, well follow colorful characters like the ever-hungry trickster Lazarillo, courtesan-cook Lozana, and glutenous squire Sancho Panza as they guide us through garden parties of Islamic Granada, fermented fish factories in Roman Spain, and chocolate harvests in colonial Mexico.

FALSEHOOD: A Machiavellian Sem Same as PHIL 538. "FALSEHOOD. A Machiavellian Seminar" What kind of speech act would make Pinocchios nose grow? The problem of insincere speech, has preoccupied many a brilliant mind. In this class we will use dishonest speech (lies, deceptions, misdirections, misrepresentations, palter, bullshit, truthiness, humbug, dog whistles, propaganda, statistics etc.) as an empirical playground to understand key notions in the study of linguistic meaning: (i) speech act theory, with attention to the theory of assertion; (ii) presuppositions and common ground, particularly in regards to Stalnakers Common Ground; (iii) implicatures, as in the work of Grice, Levinson and Horn; (iv) the semantics/pragmatics boundary and the role of context in interpretation. In the final section of the class we will investigate some of the following topics, according to student interest: (i) lies and the legal concepts of perjury, fraud, libel and defamation; (ii) deception via silence; (iii) slurs and hate language; (iv) lies, slurs, hate speech and freedom of speech; (v) fake news and the internet; (vi) bullshit; (vii) irony; (viii) metaphor; (ix) dog whistles; (x) lying and politeness We will consider the possibility that what constitutes a lie might be a culture-bound concept. Finally, we will also study why we are such suckers (according to Shakespeare and Cognitive Science). We will explore avenues for empirical research and possible dissertation topics. Prerequisites: (i) The instructor will introduce the theoretical concepts in linguistics and philosophy of language that we need for the discussion. There are no formal prerequisites. (ii) A firm commitment not to believe anything the instructor says. (iii) High tolerance for the philosophical abuse of words that end in [-ism]

Lit & Ed in 20th E Latin Amer Literature and Education in 20th-century Latin America In this seminar, we will explore the many-sided relations between literature and institutions of education in Latin America during the 20th-century. On the one hand, we will examine the writings (essays, autobiographies, prologues, childrens stories) of intellectuals who played an important part in the development of national institutions of education throughout Latin America, such as Jos Enrique Rod, Jos Vasconcelos, Gabriela Mistral and Carmen Lyra. On the other, we will read literary fictions which imagine and analyze the school experience from different individual and collective perspectives, such as Jos Mara Arguedas Los ros profundos, Rosario Castellanos Baln Cann, Mario Vargas-Llosas Los cachorros and Rodolfo Walshs short stories. Through our readings and discussions, we will inquire into the location of literature in the system of scholastic knowledges, as well as into its purported capacity to produce different forms of subjectivity and cultural identity.
