Who are U.S. Latinos/as/x/e? They number over 62 million people, making up over 20% of the nations population as of the 2020 Census. While some are recent arrivals, many trace their ancestry in this country back generations. Yet as a group, they are continually cast as newcomers, guests, or not truly Americans or part of the nations past. Why? How long have they existed in North America? What is the historical relationship between the U.S. and Latin America? Why does it matter to include Latinos as part of US history? We will explore these & other questions, beginning with Spanish colonization in the 1500s and the encounters between Europeans, Africans & indigenous peoples in the Americas up through the migration of millions of Latin Americans to the U.S. over the twentieth century. We will consider the contributions U.S. Latinos have made in labor, politics, gender, race, and sexual politics, popular culture, & much more. Fulfills LAS General Education Past Course requirement. Students can register through HIST 289 or LALS 289. Students must enroll in one Lecture and one Discussion section. Prerequisite: ENGL 161.

3 hours Art & Hum Rights in Cuba & Lat ** COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT IN SPANISH** This course delves into establishing and growing a cultural community that embraces its civic and political responsibilities amid a totalitarian regime. It examines how the interaction between art and human rights shapes the community's dynamics. The Cuban cultural community, which has evolved significantly over the past decade, is the primary subject of study. Insights from similar communities in Latin America contributed to the region's initial mapping of art and human rights. The course is theoretically centered around two essential books: "The Vulnerable Observer" by Ruth Behar and "The Cultural Politics of Emotions" by Sarah Ahmed. As a result, it emphasizes the connection between cultural community and emotional community, as well as the implications of this connection for any humanistic research.

4 hours On Biopower/Biopolitics: Fouca In The History of Sexuality, Michel Foucault famously described biopower as designating what brought life and its mechanisms into the realm of explicit calculations and made knowledge-power an agent of transformation of human life. Biopower thus amounts to the taking charge of life by power. It points to how government has assigned itself the duty of administering bodies and managing collective life. Beginning with Foucaults scattered writings on biopower/biopolitics, this course explores how the vital processes of human existence have come to matter when it comes to politics. Attention will be paid to scholars who have developed Foucaults work in fruitful directions and advanced novel concepts, specifically, Giorgio Agamben (bare life, the camp), Mbembe (necropolitics), and Nikolas Rose (politics of life itself). Empirical of examples of biopower at work will focus on Latina/os and other racialized populations in the United States, as well as on Latin America.
