EXD EXD is an opportunity for students in their senior year to immerse themselves in the practice of entrepreneurship. Students align on a problem areas of interest, then form multidisciplinary teams and work together on a particular challenge for the duration of the course. This course is co-taught by faculty in the School of Business and the School of Design. What distinguishes this course from other professional practice classes is cross-training, rather than discipline specialization. Students engage in a broad range hands-on learning exercises applying human-centered design and business methods to their team problems. This course format offers students the opportunity to develop their teamwork skills, hone personal and professional goals, and better understand the levels of risk they wish to pursue in future work with clients and in business ventures. Design students work on teams with students pursuing degrees in, Business, Engineering and Computer Science. While each student in this course will have their own unique experience, all will develop a strong set of collaborative skills supporting future work in teams. Restricted to Graphic Design or Industrial Design or Design Studies or Computer Science & Design major(s). Restricted to Master of Design. Graphic Design Lab Fee $125.00 Flat Fee.

Media Made into Moving Images This course explores the evolution of moving images, the influence of modern media, and the reciprocal practice of remaking. Students will review video works and installations, contemporary media, and common and experimental video editing techniques to understand media as material, with non-linear explorations, and cultural contexts. Through various applications of editing, layering, and altering sourced video material, students concentrate on collaging video compositions, while developing analysis, and discussions for a greater understanding of media malleability and its general social value. Restricted to Graphic Design or Industrial Design or Design Studies major(s). Graphic Design Lab Fee $125.00 Flat Fee.

Creative Coding Creative Coding is a new interdisciplinary course organized by the Department of Computer Science and the School of Design, which investigates how contemporary technologies can inspire novel forms of creative practice. It introduces software programming and creative coding techniques within the context of the digital media design. This is a project-based course designed to provide an introduction to current creative coding programming paradigms, and investigate the challenges and opportunities that emerge when using new technologies for expressive purposes. This course will introduce a variety of concepts in programming, from the basics of coding and scripting to more complex programming techniques and investigate their applications to create critical, experimental, analytical, and visualizing design. Participants will develop new skills and produce interactive projects using 3D, visualization, virtual reality, multimedia and audiovisual media. This course assumes that students have no prior programming experience but an enthusiasm to study code and scripting to use computation to extend inquiry and exploration in media and society. The course will capitalize on the diverse backgrounds of the students in the class (design + computer sci-ence) and two required projects will be developed in small teams. The first project will focus on creative programming for a high resolution, largest in the world, virtual reality environment CAVE2 in the Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL). The second project will investigate interactive visualization for 2 public outreaches using the web platform. To contextualize these projects, we will read widely from both seminal texts in multimedia and recent proceedings from computer science and media arts conferences, such as ACM SIGGRAPH and the International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA). Restricted to Graphic Design or Industrial Design or Design Studies or Computer Science & Design major(s). Graphic Design Lab Fee $125.00 Flat Fee.

What Was Postmodernism? During the last decades of the twentieth century, a series of debates erupted across the design disciplines. At issue was a range of styles and ideas that were labeled postmodern. These new approaches were so multifaceted that they remain difficult to group into a singular movement: postmodernists found inspiration in both social activism and commercial culture, theoretical detachment and bodily sensation. But many artists, architects, and designers agreed that modernism had in some way become exhausted. By the 1990s, however, postmodernism had itself been pronounced dead, and it was quickly abandoned by most of its former adherents. This graduate seminar will survey design practices of the '70s, '80s and '90s with an eye to the present: in what ways is our own time haunted by the dreams of modernism and postmodernism? Design Seminar Lab Fee $50.00 Flat Fee.

Objects of Mass Information This course is a material and conceptual exploration of the book and publishing practices. We will take a broad definition of the book over time and dissect how the need to communicate, archive, and display knowledge motivates us to continue innovating this form. Emphasis will be placed on physical making and learning through hands on experimentation and play with bookbinding, printing, collage, drawing, and other direct manipulation techniques. Readings and discussions will question the nature of the book-object, examine discourses around the authority of publishing and access to publishing resources, and publishing as an artistic and design practice. Students will produce multiple books and zines over the semester, with a culminating book project of their own design based on one of the major themes of the course. Departmental Approval Required Design Seminar Lab Fee $50.00 Flat Fee.
