Topics in Painting In this class students will explore artmaking techniques using plants grown in collaboration with the Art Garden and the UIC Greenhouse. We will learn about the cultivation, care and history of dye and fiber plants. We will make our own plant-based watercolors, paper, lake pigments and natural dyes. Our goal is to create a local color palette that reflects the idiosyncrasies of place and also challenges our dependence on synthetic, petroleum-based art supplies. We will attune ourselves to the urban ecology of the city of Chicago and question the categorization of plants into labels like native, invasive, naturalized and noxious, all while developing an intimate relationship to the plants in question. We will consider the history of Chicago through an Environmental Justice lens and think critically about the ways that infrastructure, industry and pollution are entangled with the plants we are working with. Contemporary artists and writers referenced may be Ellie Irons, Jenny Odell, Tilke Elkins, Anna Tsing, Micheal Taussig, Donna Haraway, Robin Wall Kimmerer, Jason Logan, Alexis Shotwell, Maibe Maroccolo, John Sabraw and Athena LaTocha. The aim of this class is to develop alternative artmaking practices that foster a sense of responsibility to the land on which we live and to the more-than-human-beings that we share the land with. Restricted to Art Education or Pre-Art Education or Art major(s). Studio Arts Lab Fee $75.00 Flat Fee.

Our basest instincts as humans are of protection and preservation. The preservation lends itself to the endurance of humanity; can the same be said for our images, our photos, in reflections of ourselves? Historically the lens creates a type of archive, a record, imperfect in how it dilates legacy forward towards infinity. The camera serves as both mirror and window in this sense, and in this course we will both interrogate its purpose and disentangle its uses. Students will utilize any and all image-making techniques to hone in on the pursuit of documentation - what it means to record, interpret, relive, preserve, and persevere. Topics/Paint: Through The Body Through The body: To call it simply a figure is to formalize it, stripping away its selfhood, and equating it with every other mundane thing in the world. To claim it as an I is to isolate and internalize it, ignoring its political and social obligations as one among many and many as one. The body in art, is thus inherently a site of human relation, a location within which we negotiate identities, intentions, labor, thoughts and gestures at every given moment, and always at the service, or mercy of, others. Through the practice of painting, this course will explore these ideas with a specific emphasis on embodiment and kinesthetic empathy. Students will locate their complex personal cultures and concerns for the here and now, among frameworks of art history with an emphasis on diasporic practices in contemporary painting. The class will take students through experiences of using their own movements and the marks they create to consider the body as a phenomenon that extends to others across lines of gender, generation, humanity and spirituality. By observing the practices and intellectual concerns of diverse artists who push painting to its broadest definitions, students will test the social possibilities of painting and its pliability as an art form. Restricted to Art Education or Pre-Art Education or Art major(s). Studio Arts Lab Fee $75.00 Flat Fee.

ADV Photo: Self as Avatar For this class we will be considering selfhood in all its forms. What qualifies as a self, how we perform ourselves in digital spaces vs irl, and looking at the ways in which they overlap. We will be taking a close look at the history of portraiture and storytelling, thinking hard about the ways algorithms guide our thinking and understanding of the world around us. In our current culture, how do we manifest a kind of truth within our practices of photography? What is truth in this context and why does it matter? We will be thinking about code-switching and gaming. What does this mean when one reflects on their person & perceived identity. What is truth, what is performance - perhaps they are one in the same.
