3 hours This course examines the social, political, and cultural intersections of blackness and queerness. Taking a historical approach while discussing the limits and omissions of the archive, the course examines major periods in African American history and culture through queer and trans perspectives. Multi-methodological and interdisciplinary in scope, we will discuss short stories, film, poetry, primary source material, and secondary sources from literary studies, history, legal studies, film studies, and political science. We will consider how gender and sexuality have been central to the domination and marginalization of black Americans and how African American freedom struggles have often taken place within the realm of the intimatethrough non-normative gender and sexual practices and arrangements. Through a focus on figures such as Bayard Rustin, Pauli Murray, Father Divine, Lorraine Hansberry, Mabel Hampton, Little Richard, Sylvester, Sir Lady Java, and Delisa Newton, this course centers queer and trans perspectives to challenge the gender and sexual normativity of African American history. Restricted to Undergrad - Chicago.

4 hours Racialized Gender Violence and the Politics of Care. Meets in BLST 503. In this course we will consider how the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and other modalities of difference condition multiple forms of physical, interpersonal, sexual, reproductive, discursive, emotional, and state violence. In so doing, we will engage a range of forms and disciplinary fields including film, memoir, disability studies, critical race studies, feminist theory, and history from authors and cultural producers including Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha, Mariame Kaba, Sarah Deer, Sarah Haley, Jesmyn Ward, and many others . We will simultaneously consider how care work informs the mechanisms, methodologies, and theories that shape our research practices so as to deliberate on Saidiya Hartmans assertion that care is the antidote to violence, and to think collectively about the challenges and responsibilities of writing about the forms of harm that touch us all. This course is designed as a writing workshop in the tradition of black feminist writer and activist Toni Cade Bambara who taught us that people have to be given permission to write, and they have to be given space to breathe and stumble. Each student will spend the semester developing a single essay or dissertation chapter that is related to the themes of the course and will be paired with a workshop partner who they will work with throughout the semester on developing the components of the paper (abstract, bibliography, intro, outline). The full drafts will also be workshopped with the entire class at the end of the semester.
