3 hours Modern Mexican Art This course investigates the development of Mexican art from the early nineteenth century to the present. Attending to a wide range of artistic practices as they unfolded between the Mexican War of Independence (18101821) and the twenty-first century, our explorations will be motivated by the question of what it means to study the history of art within the structure of a nation-state. In other words, what role did Mexican art play in the formation and development of Mexican identity over the course of the last two centuries? How did artists both uphold foundational myths of Mexican identity and disrupt those myths through their attention to class, race, indigeneity, gender, and sexuality? Through case studies including Jos Mara Velascos romantic landscape paintings in the nineteenth century, the Mexican Muralists heroic and monumental visions of the post-Revolutionary period, the collective, conceptual experiments of los grupos that pushed against State violence, repression, and censorship in the 1970s, and Mexico Citys present role as a Mecca of international art, we will examine successes and failures, tensions, contradictions, and resistances to the idea of creating a uniquely Mexican form of modern art. Course Information: 3 undergraduate hours. 4 graduate hours. May be repeated up to 2 time(s) if topics vary. Students may register in more than one section per term. Prerequisite(s): 3 hours of art history at the 200 level or consent of the instructor. Restricted to Undergrad - Chicago.

3 hours Medici Patronage This course examines the artistic and cultural patronage of the Medici of Florence from Cosimo il Vecchio in the late fifteenth century to Grand Duke Cosimo II in the early seventeenth century. Organized roughly chronologically, the course considers the changes and continuities in the artistic interests of this eminent family in relation to cultural, economic, political and religious transformations in Florence and beyond.. More broadly, we will explore the value of patronage studies in art history, considering issues such as the agency of the artist, political propaganda, corporate identity, female patronage, religious sponsorship, and collecting and display practices. Class readings combine the study of documentary sources such as Medici letters and inventories with primary sources by Machiavelli and Vasari, and secondary sources on specific Medici patrons, artists, works of art and architectural structures. Course trips will visit the Art Institute of Chicago and the Newberry Library. Restricted to Undergrad - Chicago.

Global Modernisms This course will examine modern art from a global perspective. Following critic and curator Geeta Kapur, we will ask: When was modernism? and How are we placed?that is, how do historical and geographic positionalities inform and deform definitions of modernism in art historical discourse? As such, we will examine artistic production in Asia, Africa, the Americas, the Middle East, and their diasporas during the twentieth century. We will consider how narratives of global modernism are entangled with colonial histories and will critically examine the theoretical and historiographic frameworks necessary to de-colonize modernist art history. Throughout we will seek to trouble art historical periodization by interrogating terms such as modernism, postmodernism, postcolonial, and the contemporary. Course assignments include weekly readings, discussion, presentations, and a final course paper related to the course topic and based on students interests.
