The course investigates how manifestations of the African divine energize spaces in which Black diasporic congregants transform dance, songs, and visual arts into everyday philosophies and social bonds. The course will also bring our analyses closer to students realities by paying careful attention to how popular cultures circulate these energies globally. In addition to using critical thinking skills, students will be asked to participate in movement workshops and do a creative presentation, but no prior experience is necessary.

Blk Spirit, Soc Transformation Black Spirituality and Social Transformation Black religious traditions and spirituality have been crucial to visions of justice, social movements, and efforts to transform society. This course is an exploration into the ethical underpinnings of justice and social transformation, as witnessed in the multiple visions and voices inspired by Black spirituality. While the separation of religion from spirituality is considered a norm, our course of study will engage Charles Longs definition of religion as, orientation, how human beings come to terms with their ultimate existence (Long, Significations).
