Changing Forms: Social Eng Art Changing Forms: Socially Engaged Art & Performance This course explores social engagement as an artistc methodology. Since all art is necessarily given in a social context, students will learn to identify qualities and questions unique to socially engaged forms, exploring the somatic, economic, and ethical dimensions of art (i.e. how it feels, what it's worth, and to whom). Social engagement requires that artists pay close attention to the worlds they inhabit, exploring what it means to work with others, within and against systems of control. For inspiration and guidance, we will delve into artists and projects around the world, in and out of contemporary art's spotlight, with a particular interest in live art (performance). Students are invited to bring a sense of play, openness, experimentation, and criticality to the classroom, where they will develop original artworks and engage in thoughtful discussion with their peers. By the end of the course, students will understand themselves as thoughtful, artistic agents of change. No experience required, all are welcome. Course Information: 3 hours. ADV Photo: I.I.I. Intuition, Imagination, Intention. This is a course about making art without fear. We will explore questions about art, and questions that matter to yourself as a citizen of the world. The course will address diverse forms of representation in art - to both represent reality, and to explore the intricacies and the fancies of the imagination. It is a production course. Addressing conventional and unconventional methods of image making, the course focuses on experimentation in photography and in any medium. The strategies that can be used for the creative work are open ended. You could follow any process of art making, formal and conceptual, that suits your expressive needs at this time. One of the goals of this course is to support your creative growth as you question, take risks, work, play, and critically engage in making art. Course Information: Previously listed as AD 360. Artists/Artists Writing While visual art can never be reduced to language, writing about ones own work forms an essential part of any contemporary artists practice. In this course, well consider varied modes and reasons for writing: as intimate act, as generative mechanism, as persuasive tool, as declaration of intent, as misdirection, as play, as integrated extension of ones practice. While covering varied modes of artists writing, we will pay special attention to the written artists statementits history, circulation channels, and conventional forms. Well unpack underlying ideologies and aesthetic choices, and explore artists strategies to work within existing conventions, to subvert them, and to refuse them altogether. Through a structure that mixes seminar and workshop formats, students will actively participate in close, critical reading of other artists writing and will also be supported in intensive work on their own texts. If funding for course visitors is available, guests would include several artists for whom writing plays a strong role in their practice, and a guest writer/editor. By the courses end, students will develop an informed and intentional approach to writing about their own practice. Coursework will at times overlap with the development of MFA theses. Previously listed as AD 502. Must be repeated for a minimum of 16 hours. Prerequisites: Graduate standing and consent of the School, graduate faculty committee, and the student's advisor. Media Arts in Sex and Gender This course investigates how gender and sex in transgender, cis gender, gender-non conforming, and queer identities is transmitted through media. We will analyze ways that people produce their identities in erotic labor, sexual intimacy, and queer expressions through new media formats. The course will review art practices and theoretical writings to facilitate discourse on current media consumption. We will analyze how sex is consumed in virtual spaces as well as the mediation of gendered bodies within current technologies. In reviewing media such as video games, film, pornography, video, virtual spaces, and social media this course will address structural hierarchies existing in gender, race, sexual identity, and the positionality of these intersecting identities. Overall, the course will encourage critical thinking and discourse in new radical forms of challenging current and historical aspects of gender and sex. Previously listed as AD 502.
