"After 1492: Hispanic Cultural Studies between Islam and the Americas" The year 1492 began with the fall of the last Muslim kingdom in Iberia, and just a few months later all the Jews of Spain were forced to either convert or leave. By the years end, contact between Spain and the Americas commenced a new global era of imperialism and colonization. These were world altering events, but this course, as an introduction to cultural studies, will view them through a different lens: as moments that defined Hispanic literature and culture up to the present day. Indeed, also in this very same year, the Spanish language was codified with its first grammar that of any modern vernacular- composed by a scholar of Jewish descent. As a class, we will thus explore the idea that Hispanic culture, or cultures, were born of paradox. Spains national identity arose through both the cultural erasure and persistent residue of its Semitic Others. And in the Americas, the Spanish empire violently imposed itself both politically and culturally, yet indigenous voices still found modes of expression and even resistance. Because these cultural paradoxes were long lasting, we will explore not only literature written in the years wake but also contemporary fiction that continues to grapple with 1492 and its legacy. From an interdisciplinary perspective, we will situate these literary texts in conversation with historical and visual documents, such as legal writings and correspondences, paintings and maps. And as an introduction to the field of Cultural Studies, our readings will also heavily emphasize theoretical discussions on imperialism and (post-)colonialism, the nation and its others, secularism and ethno-religious minorities, and the unique capacity for literature and fiction to address questions of culture. Course Information: Prerequisite(s): Sophomore standing or above and Grade of C or better in SPAN 210. Bilingual (Dis)advantages Learning and using two (or more) languages has a significant impact on one's cognition. But this should not be surprising, given the complexity and diversity of experiences that are required to become bilingual (or multilingual), from immersion in multiple cultures to choosing a language (or even languages) to use in a conversation. Compared to monolinguals, the result of this process is a mix of some advantages, some neutral differences, and a few potential disadvantages. In this course, then, we'll explore the myriad ways that people become bilingual and what impact this has on everything from using language and learning new languages to academics and cognitive health. Course Information: Prerequisite(s): Grade of C or better in SPAN 206; and sophomore standing or above.

"Indigenous languages of Latin America and Spanish in contact with indigenous languages" This seminar provides an initial overview of the language families spoken by indigenous peoples in Latin America, followed by an in-depth analysis of some of the most salient aspects of the syntax and morphology of a subset of languages. We will focus on evidentiality, positional verbs, ergativity, and informational structure, among other phenomena. All of these have had and continue to have an impact on Spanish in contact with these languages. Some of the languages we will discuss are Zapotec, Maya Kiche, Quechua, Aymara, Shipibo, and Ashaninka.
