"Cinema and the Border" Description: American identity and history has long been articulated through its relationship to the western frontier and southern border. Since the early twentieth century, hundreds of films have taken place in and been made about the border region that have served as a powerful means of visualizing and performing American values and history, often justifying or erasing the contradictions at the core of its historical narrative. In this course, we examine films in relation to the many iterations of the frontier myth at the heart of U.S. history and to what historian Greg Grandin claims is the "end of the myth" in recent years. We will be thinking about them cross-temporally as primary texts (about the time in which they were made) and as interpretations, desires, or anxieties about the past, present, and future. We will trace the evolution of the frontier myth and the history of the border through cinema and think about how film aesthetics, genres, and themes have shifted over time to challenge that myth and envision new pasts and futures.

Multiculturalism & Democracy: The Latino Experience in the U.S. Description: Unlike the experiences of White European Americans, history demonstrates that Native Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, and Latinos have experienced and endured multigenerational exclusions from the full rights and privileges of U.S. citizenship because of their race, ethnicity or ancestry. Through an exploration of the interactions between social minority communities, society, political institutions and economic actors, this course examines when, why and how race shapes the journey towards full citizenship and equal opportunity among people of color with a specific emphasis on the Latino community. Building off an overview of the historic roots of inequality and case studies of more contemporary events, this course explores how well democracy works for a diversity of values, beliefs, attitudes and practices in an increasingly heterogenous society and how public policy is and can be used to promote democracy. More specifically, this course considers how democratic ideals such as civil liberties and civil rights are extended to cultural minorities and their level of political, economic, and social incorporation into the mainstream.

3 hours Contemporary Violence and Criminal Governance in Latin America. This advanced seminar provides a systematic overview of violence, criminality, and governance in contemporary Latin America. The seminar describes existing trends and analyzes the root sources behind violence in the region. In so doing, it interrogates whether existing patterns differ from early periods and, if so, how. It also reviews the nature, attributes and modi operandi of violent actors including the State, guerrillas, paramilitary groups, and criminal organizations. It also examines some of the societal consequences prompted by violence including resistance mechanisms and population uprooting. In a related way, the seminar investigates the notion of criminal governance (i.e., instances in which criminal organizations assume state-like functions and govern over segments of the population). While addressing this topic, a growing trend in the region, the seminar addresses critical concepts such as state fragility, citizen security, state criminal co-governance. The class draws upon important case studies including Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Mexico and Peru and Venezuela.Politics and Violence in Latin America Restricted to Undergrad - Chicago.
