"The Politics of 'Friendship': Gender, Informal Relations, and the State" This course explores how different forms of inter-personal relationshipsclientelism, friendship, and patronage, among otherscondition informal strategies for gendered political engagement. It considers these concepts within a number of different regional contexts including, but not limited to, Latin America, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. The first part of the course surveys how scholars have defined and examined informal relationships as an important tactic through which subjects gain access to the formal state. Building on this foundation, the second part of the course reviews how friendships, specifically, are constitutive of both individual and collective political action. This three-credit, reading intensive course is designed for upper-level undergraduate students completing their minor in International Studies, though students from other disciplines are welcome to enroll.
