This course is an exploration of Greeces culture through Modern Greek history, literature, cinema, and art. Some questions that the course will explore are: How does Modern Greece compare to its idealized ancient version? What were Greeces trials and tribulations in its pursuit of European modernity? What were some of the literary and artistic achievements of the twentieth century in Greece as intellectuals and artists tried to reinvent Greeces cultural past and redefine Modern Greek identity? Why do Greeks believe in the uniqueness of their country and identity? How did Greece, after having achieved the Greek economic miracle in the 1950s, come to experience the devastating financial crisis in 2009? What are some of the socioeconomic consequences Greece has experienced from the recent Eurozone Economic Crisis and the Eurozone Refugee Crisis? By focusing on a variety of historical events, this course will help students gain insight into the multifaceted rich culture of the Greek world. Readings consist partly of non-literary texts and partly of selected literary texts by major Greek authors. Course Information: Taught in English. World Cultures course.
