"Esprits: Art et Narration de l'Afrique Francophone et de la Diaspora" A survey of literary and cultural creations from the French-Speaking world, this seminar will focus on narratives, poems, fine arts, and films by writers, artists and directors from Martinique, Guadeloupe, Madagascar, Senegal, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and migrating francophone artists and writers. In all these cultural productions, we encounter spiritual traditions and beliefs which interconnect and are in dialogue with each other. Course Objectives: An introduction to the cultures, literatures, and politics of the Francophone world of Africa, the Caribbean, and multi-ethnic France; An introduction to theories of post colonialism, race, and gender.; To learn terms and methods useful to the critical discussion and analysis of texts.; To bridge literature, cinema, and fine arts within their political and historical contexts.; To improve students reasoning, speaking, and writing skills in French.
