Chinese Myths and Fables Storytelling is an essential way through which cultures are passed down from one generation to the next -in the case of Chinese storytelling, over thousands of years. Knowledge of Chinese mythology and folklores provides a window into the ways that the Chinese people understand the natural and social worlds around them. Chinese mythology and folklores have been an amazing source of inspiration around the world and across disciplines particularly in philosophy, history, anthropology, sociology, and the creative arts. In this Special Topics class, we will sample and discuss Chinese mythology and folklores including creation myths, fables of Confucian, Taoist, and Legalist traditions, religious stories, ghost stories, mythical plants and creatures as well as the making of deities. Stories with deep historical roots and popular modern renditions, such as Mulan, Nezha, Change, will be discussed in the context of popular films and different interpretations of "authenticity". The class uses Chinese mythology to help students both understand the Chinese culture and develop advanced Chinese language proficiency through communicative practices. Class is taught in a mixture of English and Mandarin Chinese. Assignments are to be submitted in Mandarin Chinese. Language development is supported through customized reading, vocabulary learning and thematic language tasks Course Information: May be repeated to a maximum of 6 hours, if topics vary. Prerequisite(s): Grade of C or better or concurrent registration in CHIN 200 or Grade of C or better of concurrent registration in CHIN 209; or consent of the instructor.
