Language Contact, Language Acquisition, and Bilingualism Some of us understand the main ideas in a language, but we cannot produce them with the same ease. Some of us speak languages other than English, especially at home, but our interactions in those languages diminish as we grow up; we also encounter speakers of languages other than English, but we dont interact with them in those languages. In this course, we will explore how we develop language in different contexts.

Developmental Cognitive Ling LING 300: Developmental Cognitive Linguistics (Seminar in Linguistic Analysis) (This course will be taught by Max Kade professor) For a long time, language acquisition has been investigated from a purely linguistic perspective, ignoring the role of cognition. Developmental Cognitive Linguistics puts cognition back at the heart of language acquisition by examining the extent to which domain-general abilities, such as memory, attention, inhibition, categorization, analogy, and social cognition, shape the development of linguistic knowledge. This course explores how children acquire one or more languages and how their emerging cognitive capacities both influence and are influenced by the learning process. We will work empirically with real child data and engage with methods from corpus linguistics to investigate authentic language use and developmental patterns. We will consider first and multilingual acquisition, as well as both child and adult learners, in order to trace how cognitive and linguistic abilities develop, interact, and sometimes decline across the lifespan.
