According to a recent survey, 84% of the U.S. population ages 13 and over consumes true-crime programming, and across the true-crime ecosystemwhich includes television, film, literature, podcasts, and social mediamurder cases are the number one topic of interest. A little over a decade ago, series like Serial, Making a Murderer, and The Jinx became hugely popular and helped to instigate the contemporary surge in true-crime content and consumption. But what are the stakes of this popularity? Why is the American public so taken with stories that center violence, particularly when they involve (certain) women and girls? And who or what is actually behind what some commentators refer to as the true crime industrial complex? In this course, we will take up these questions and more by attending specifically to the intersections of gender, race, sexuality, and class, and considering how those intersections affect the narration and production of stories about real life violence in popular media. We will also explore the long history of crime-based storytelling (from Shakespeare to Law & Order) that preceded, and informs, this recent surge, and consider how feminist artists, cultural producers, and organizers have countered the excesses of the genre. Note that students in this course must be prepared to engage actively with true-crime media, including content that deals explicitly with gender-based violence. | ||||||||

Drawing on feminist, abolitionist, and decolonial traditions, we will study how struggles against prisons and policing have transformed our understanding of justice, while placing those struggles in conversation with movements against settler colonialism, border enforcement, racial capitalism, war, and organized abandonment. Rather than treating justice as something administered primarily through law or punishment, the course approaches it as an unfinished political question: What would it take to build forms of collective life that do not depend on captivity, dispossession, or premature death? One thread running through the semester is theft. We will ask what becomes visible when theft is understood beyond the taking of private property. Land can be stolen; so can labor, time, mobility, bodily autonomy, knowledge, kinship, and the conditions necessary to sustain a future. But these forms of taking are not interchangeable. The course will therefore attend carefully to the different histories and political logics of slavery, dispossession, extraction, enclosure, incarceration, occupation, and abandonment. Our task is to understand how institutions make such losses appear lawful, necessary, or even protective, and how feminist movements have learned to name what those institutions obscure. The seminar ultimately turns from critique toward the difficult work of imagining and practicing otherwise. Abolition and decolonization do more than expose the violence of existing arrangements; they ask what must be dismantled, what must be returned or repaired, and what new relations might have to be built in their place. Through scholarship, movement writing, cultural production, film, and collective discussion, we will consider experiments in mutual aid, disability justice, transformative justice, reparations, refusal, and radical worldmaking. Feminism and Justice asks us to approach justice not as a settled ideal but as a practice: a struggle over how we live together, what we owe one another, and what kinds of worlds we are willing to make possible.
