| PoliticsofModern European Self The Politics of the Modern (Central and Eastern) European Self. The seminar will explore a wide, interdisciplinary range of topicsincluding literature, philosophy, economics, and politicsto analyze various figures of the self in the long 19th-century world and their political implications. It will consider significant figures in modern Central and Eastern literature, from Dostoevsky to Witkiewicz, from Gogol to Gombrowicz, from Kafka to Schulz, from Musil to Cioran, to see how Polish, Russian, German, and Romanian literature perform the dialectics of the self and community. Two key dominant perspectives on the self during this periodsovereignty and freedomwill be contrasted with their negative counterpartssubmission and subjectionto examine how the will and its absence shape the relationship between individualism and societal forces, and what the political consequences of intellectual choices are. Besides mapping a broad network of intellectual exchanges across cultures and languages, the seminar aims to develop a framework crucial to understanding the concept of the self today. | ||||||||
