A Study of Human Portraiture Anthrophotography: A Study of Human Portraiture Instructor: Zuri Washington Despite being some of the youngest beings on this planet, humanity has made an irrefutable, potentially irreversible impact on the environment and climate. But destruction isnt our only legacy. From cave paintings to the very first photographs, we have always desired a way to capture and represent ourselves. Over the course of this semester, you will be tasked with doing the same; seeking out humanity (through people and evidence of people) and documenting it through photography and photography-adjacent work. Candid portraits, self portraits, documentary, and even staged photographs are welcome. The goal is to capture and interrogate our humanity as it exists now. Photo Lab Fee $100.00 Flat Fee.

Experimental Analog Filmmaking Experimental Analog Filmmaking Instructor: Edgar Jorge Baralt This course will provide an introduction to different aspects of 16mm filmmaking. Covering the Bolex camera, camera-less techniques, hand-processing, telecine and basic projection among others. While it is often said that celluloid film is dead or a medium of the past, it is still very much alive with a thriving artistic output in the present. With slower processes to image-making than its digital counterpart, analog filmmaking tends to elicit a relationship with the filmed subject open to memory, association, and transformation. These aspects of the medium have been highlighted by the work of experimental filmmakers, using it in personal yet radical explorations of their perception and engagement with the world. While the class will work primarily as a technical workshop, it will also engage the films and writings of filmmakers who have expanded the medium and continue to do so. Restricted to Art Education or Pre-Art Education or Art major(s). Moving Image Lab Fee $150.00 Flat Fee.

Experiments in Editing Experiments in Editing Instructor: Kera MacKenzie This course is dedicated to honing your individual editing practice and is designed to sharpen your post-production skills through studying and applying different editing theories and practices. Experiments in Editing will be a rigorous investigation of the art of moving image editing and will provide a historical and theoretical understanding of both classical film editing and newer models. The course is structured around a series of technical lectures and hands-on workshops as well as discussions of theoretical texts and screenings of films selected to address important issues in the post-production process. Through a close reading of those films, students will discover the core aesthetic decisions, structures, strategies and demands of editing single channel or cinematic works. In addition, we will discuss how editing functions for the installation artist, and how television, new media, and the internet have made an impact on concepts of editing. Post-production is not limited to splicing clips, which means we will delve into the vastness of workflows, timing/pacing/rhythm, sound design/mixing, color correction/grading, visual effects, compression, and distribution. Software covered will include DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Audition, and Media Encoder. While we will explore different approaches, which can be applied to narrative, non-fiction, or experimental filmmaking, the ultimate goal of this class will be for you to determine and enhance your unique style of editing. Restricted to Art Education or Pre-Art Education or Art major(s). Moving Image Lab Fee $75.00 Flat Fee.

Prison Movies ART 290 Prison Movies This course examines American prison movies from the 1930s to the present, a genre that has both reflected and shaped public understandings of punishment, justice, and social order. Recurring scenes of exploitation, cruelty, camaraderie, corruption, rebellion, and escape reveal the moral tensions and social anxieties surrounding extreme punishment, as well as other contemporary issues. Prison cinema also provides a lens onto the prison system itself. Set in penitentiaries, prison farms, and chain gangs, these films offered a way to imagine the realities of confinement and the fraught dynamics between wardens, correctional officers, and people in custody. The course traces how the genre evolved alongside rapid shifts in penal philosophy, public opinion, and cinematic conventions. Class sessions combine analysis of film aesthetics with readings in history, sociology, and film studies to explore how thematic and ideological concerns are conveyed through cinematic form. This class has no online component. Students should expect to attend all sessions as all screenings and discussions take place in person. Studio Arts Lab Fee $40.00 Flat Fee.

Interiorities: House/Museum Interiorities: Art Journeys Into the House and Museum Interiorities: House/Museum Fridays from 1 pm to 5 pm. This course is a seminar and studio course combined: we will use UICs Hull House Museum as a pivot. The goal is to learn about the original goals of the Hull House and respond to them. At the beginning and middle of the 20th century, the Hull House welcomed recent immigrants to learn from and with each other. This course is based on the principle of gaining and sharing knowledge together. We will look at collections, respond to them critically to learn from the past interiorities. We will contextualize these and think about how, if at all, they relate to the present. In addition to the Hull House Museum, we will embark on numerous off-site field trips across Chicago to visit other house museums or house-like spaces. We will explore what happened and could happen in those interiors. We will think about what a collection is, how it functions. We will think about private spaces and public spaces. In both instances, we will explore what interiority means in the artistic sense and why it is important to cultivate interiority in a busy world. We will meet with curators and conservators who will tell us about collections and about custodianship. And as a culmination, participants will create individually and co-create collectively a final art project. All along we will make drawings and writings. Participants in the course can work with any medium or media if it is not toxic within the environment of the assigned space. Students are expected to read, write, discuss and create critically. Students are expected to travel frequently to off-site field sites and arrive on time. The course meets once a week for four hours and requires additional individual work outside of class time to fulfill the total credit hours. Art Seminar Lab Fee $55.00 Flat Fee.

Duchamps Legs: On authorship Duchamps Legs: On authorship, the readymade, the unfinished work, and what artists write Professor: Hannah B Higgins What happens in the gap between what an artist intends, what actually gets made, and the audience? Marcel Duchamp called this the "art coefficient," the measure of everything that escapes intention, that belongs to no one, that waits for the next person to complete. This seminar takes these gaps as its subject and its method. We begin with Duchamp's writings, the fragmentary Green Box notes (shown above), scattered across scraps and gas bills and laid into a facsimile box in 1934, and the eight-minute 1957 lecture "The Creative Act," the organizing text for the course. The course will move from Duchamp through the collaborations that shaped Duchamps thinking: bookbinder Mary Reynolds, whose surrealist bindings turned the book into a readymade object; John Cage and Alison Knowles, who transformed the musical score into a field of open permission; and Fluxus co-founders, Yoko Ono and Benjamin Patterson, who brought race explicitly into the avant-garde's constitutive gap. Archival field trips anchor the course in Chicago's living collections. The second half of the course traces Duchamps Legacies (the Legs in the course title) to contemporary work by Mona Hatoum, William Pope.L, Cauleen Smith, Tania Bruguera, and Theaster Gates. Shown here is Pope Ls Eating the Wall Street Journal with Flag (1991), which treats the body as a readymade. Two writing exercises will ask students to work in the genres the course studies: notes that circle a work without resolving it, and a score written for a reader who may or may not perform it. Final projects will include either an evening of performance with a program (location TBD), a publication, or a research paper as determined by each student. Art Seminar Lab Fee $40.00 Flat Fee.
