Visual Culture/Mexican Corrido This course analyzes the visual culture of corridosMexican narrative ballads that tell stories of everyday life, politics, migration, and conflict. It begins with the articulation of class in Spanish colonial art and culminates with the international rise of corridos tumbados, a recent, street-style subgenre that signals shifting ideas of youth identity, taste, and belonging. Through an analysis of viceregal portraiture, nineteenth-century print culture and political satire, mid-twentieth-century narco-cinema, and contemporary installation art, the course examines how class, race, and gender are constructed in Mexico.

3 hours Haunted S. and SE Asia Ghosts, spirits, apparitions: how might these powerful figments of the imagination function as methodological tools for examining political, social, and cultural concepts and contestations? Drawing on hauntological approaches, we will consider how spectral presences evoke unresolved pasts, marginalized communities that refuse to be erased, or the crisis of climate change. This seminar will investigate some of the earliest images of spirit deities and ghosts in ancient South and Southeast Asian art, cursed objects from colonial India, and haunted havelis. We will pay special attention to filmic images of the unruly dead. Restricted to Undergrad - Chicago.
