"Cervantess Don Quixote: A Quest of Knights and Readers from Islamic Spain to the New World" Lets journey into a world of feminist shepherdesses and cross-dressing priests, enchanted caves and trips to the moon, fortune-telling monkeys, devious wizards, trickster puppeteers, sadistic aristocrats, and messy love trianglesnot to mention, windmills that become giants. Our guides on this journey are just as bizarre: an obsessive reader who thinks hes a knight in shining armor and a farmer who may or may not get to govern his own island (no spoilers!). In this course, we are going to move away from a Eurocentric framework to instead situate Cervantess masterpiece alongside poems by the Mexican nun Sor Juana de la Cruz, Incan histories, and the story of a star- crossed lovers from Islamic Granada trying to survive in Christian Spain. Ours will be a quest through history and fiction, magic and the imagination.
