| Same as ART 323 and ENGL 331. Topics in Justice: American Prison Movies Rebellion, Resistance, Escape This course explores the prison film genre as a lens for understanding American views on justice, crime, and punishment. Through a selection of classic and contemporary films set inside maximum-security prisons, we will examine how prison cinema has shaped and articulated rapidly changing public perceptions of incarceration, criminal justice policies, and the role of the state in maintaining social order. The course will analyze how these films have contributed toor complicatedthe ideological shifts of the past century that led to the punitive turn and hyper-incarceration, examining cinematic storytelling, including narrative structure, character development, and visual style, as well as narrative tropes about prisoners and prisons. Each film will be paired with historical analysis and academic research providing context for weekly topics in the criminal legal system. Weekly reading is required. No prerequisites. | ||||||||
