Topics in Art: Give a Thought! ART 382, TOPICS in ART: Give a Thought! On what a sustainable art practice might be (Formerly known as How to be a Professional Artist) This is a discussion seminar that will help prepare you for a life in the arts. Youll learn from established guest artists and curators about how they arrived at their respective artistic platforms. There will be numerous field trips off campus. Practical fundamentals will include: the artists statement; how to talk about and lecture about your work publicly; how you might network and create community; what are your goals; discussing challenges; how to develop and use organizational skills to find opportunities. These are methods that only you can put into practice, so give a thought! The objective is to start to improve on these methods. Expectations: arrive on time, do not miss class, meet all deadlines, read and write, re-read and re-write, submit assignments when they are due, and participate in discussion. Public speaking is part of this course. Thinking is thrilling, it is part of making, and feeling. Art Seminar Lab Fee $55.00 Flat Fee.

Topics Seminar: Fluxus Fluxus has been called an attitude, an art movement, NeoDada, a real estate scheme, a self-selected community, a form of experimental poetry, and a means of shaping human experience. Some say it belongs to the 1960s. Others say it is a form of Postmodernism. Yet others view it as a tool for permanent creation. Depending on the artist or artists, Fluxus is all these things, but also none of them. This course combines history, theory and practice to explore the potentials of Fluxus for the present. We will read together, perform for each other, and make multiples to share with the class. Art Seminar Lab Fee $40.00 Flat Fee.

ART 520: Artists Writing Overview While visual art can never be reduced to language, writing about ones own work forms an essential part of any contemporary artists practice. In this course, well consider varied modes and reasons for writing: as generative mechanism, as persuasive tool, as intimate act, as declaration of intent, as misdirection, as play, as instruction, as interpretation. While covering varied modes of artists writing, we will pay special attention to the written artists statement and its uses, circulation channels, conventional forms, and alternatives. Well unpack underlying ideologies and aesthetic strategies, and explore artists choices about whether to work within existing conventions, subvert them, or refuse them altogether. The course structure will mix seminar and workshop formats. Students will be supported in intensive work on their own writing, including extensive in-class peer feedback and 1:1 meetings with an external art critic who will provide feedback on draft artists statements. The course will overlap with the development of MFA theses, but its broader intent is to support students in shaping intentional approaches to writing that suit their individual practices. While designed for second-year MFA students, students from related disciplines who feel they would benefit from the course are welcome to register with advance permission from the instructor. Art Seminar Lab Fee $40.00 Flat Fee.
