Topics in Paint 1: Wet Bodies Humans are not completely autonomous in what happens to and around us. We are participants, like the rest of nature. If we think about it, bodies exceed their bounded materiality as an individual. In this course, students will be asked to consider how our bodies and actions impact the broader ecosystem, and reflect on, and investigate, bodies from an environmental and ecological perspective through painting using oil paint, ink, and other painting media and methodologies. Students will be prompted to explore water and wetness' as constructs with literal, symbolic, and abstract dimensions in understanding the interrelations among various forms of permeable bodies, including avian, terrestrial, aquatic, geographic, and synthetic entities. Students will learn through a variety of life painting sessions, investigation of ecological processes which may include field trips, short videos and readings, discussions, and experimentation with diverse modes of visual thinking, such as collaging, detail rendering, mark-making, color studying, collaborative painting...etc. Artists will likely include Ellen Altfest, Leonora Carrington, Jenny Saville, Jennifer Packer, Cecily Brown, Kwangho Lee, Doris Salcedo, Tracey Emin, Wangechi Mutu, Roni Horn, Vija Celmins, Helen Verhoeven, and many more. From Papermaking to Print This class centers on the process of making handmade paper, using both traditional techniques and foraged materials gathered e.g. from the art garden or other places. Papermaking becomes a way of engaging with our immediate environmenttransforming matter into a surface for print. As we experiment with both analog and digital printing methods, we explore how paper itself carries meaning: as a record of place, season, and labor. The class encourages a thoughtful engagement with the relationship between material, process, and image, asking how the tactile act of making can ground us more fully in the intricate ecologies that shape us. Topic/Film-Cine-Thinking Filmmaking as an Extension of Thought This course will investigate different methods in which filmmaking actively provides an extension to our thinking, paying particular attention to how certain approaches 16mm experimental film amplify and highlight this cinema-thought dynamic. Drawing a parallel between the malleability of thoughts and the possibilities of cinema, we will explore how these two processes interact in order to enhance the students filmmaking practice. The class will start by investigating how the act of filming can increase our focus and heighten our response to each passing moment, opening up aesthetic opportunities. From there we will engage more amorphous and unpredictable aspects of thought like memory, the unconscious, and dream states. A basic understanding of 16mm film cameras and facilities available to students in the MI/PH department is required. While technical knowledge will be instructed and/or reviewed throughout the semester, including 16mm sync sound cameras, the focus of the class will be on exploring the themes described. Students will produce projects that engage these themes as source material. Lectures will be complemented by screenings, readings and discussions revisiting the work of filmmakers who have used similar approaches. Moving Image Lab Fee $150.00 Flat Fee.

Topics Seminar: Fluxus Fluxus has been called an attitude, an art movement, NeoDada, a real estate scheme, a self-selected community, a form of experimental poetry, and a means of shaping human experience. Some say it belongs to the 1960s. Others say it is a form of Postmodernism. Yet others view it as a tool for permanent creation. Depending on the artist or artists, Fluxus is all these things, but also none of them. This course combines history, theory and practice to explore the potentials of Fluxus for the present. We will read together, perform for each other, and make multiples to share with the class. Departmental Approval Required Art Seminar Lab Fee $40.00 Flat Fee.

ART 520: Artists Writing Overview While visual art can never be reduced to language, writing about ones own work forms an essential part of any contemporary artists practice. In this course, well consider varied modes and reasons for writing: as generative mechanism, as persuasive tool, as intimate act, as declaration of intent, as misdirection, as play, as instruction, as interpretation. While covering varied modes of artists writing, we will pay special attention to the written artists statement and its uses, circulation channels, conventional forms, and alternatives. Well unpack underlying ideologies and aesthetic strategies, and explore artists choices about whether to work within existing conventions, subvert them, or refuse them altogether. The course structure will mix seminar and workshop formats. Students will be supported in intensive work on their own writing, including extensive in-class peer feedback and 1:1 meetings with an external art critic who will provide feedback on draft artists statements. The course will overlap with the development of MFA theses, but its broader intent is to support students in shaping intentional approaches to writing that suit their individual practices. While designed for second-year MFA students, students from related disciplines who feel they would benefit from the course are welcome to register with advance permission from the instructor. Art Seminar Lab Fee $40.00 Flat Fee.

This course takes aesthetic and political approaches to study the Illinois carceral landscape. Through theoretical readings, engaged research, and participatory interviews, we will consider the daily lives of people under the most extreme forms of carceral control, including people with life sentences on the inside, and people subject to housing banishment laws and public conviction registries on the outside. This consideration includes sensory experiences, movements, schedules, visibility, stigma, and sense of time passing. We will learn about the structure of the prison and police administrations: the paramilitary structure, the bureaucracy, and the labor dynamics. We will examine the social and political relations between law enforcement, prisons, legislators, advocates, family members, people in custody, free people, and the systems of classification and identification used by each. We will discover how these factors construct public understandings of the carceral state, and how that bears on public policy. This interdisciplinary course is designed for students of public policy, sociology, social work, political science, criminology, architecture and art. Weekly reading and writing required. No prerequisites.
