James Baldwin: Poet & Prophet James Baldwin was one of the critical voices of the 20th century. Baldwins writing style was an unconventional poetics influenced by Black music and the Hebrew prophets. He observed that the artist was a poet, one who sacrificed populism in order to speak truth to power. With classic essays such as, The Fire Next Time, and in fiction such as, Go Tell it On the Mountain, Baldwin left the world with a treasure of timeless wisdom. This course, James Baldwin: Poet and Prophet, is one of contemplation and close examination of the self and its relationship to society and the world. Departmental Approval Required
