Workshops in Social Practice ART190: Workshops in Social Practice This course provides an introduction to social practice, a genre of art that depends on inquiry, dialogue, participation, and action, and takes place in connection with other people. Artists have used social practice to fill community needs, generate new social dynamics, bring attention to public space, interpret history, influence policy, provoke audiences, produce comedy, celebrate the uselessness of art, and more. Through dialogues, class experiments, and interventions, we will explore and evaluate the ways that artists intervene in society and create new structures of civic participation. Hands-on workshops will allow students to explore their own areas of interest, working individually and in groups to experiment with socially-engaged art. The class will examine local case studies in policing and prison reentry policy. No prior experience required. This is usually an in-person synchronic class. However, the instructor will hold 2-3 classes online. Because this is a studio workshop that only meets once a week, the attendance policy is strict. Do not take this course if you anticipate missing class. Please contact Prof. Laurie Jo Reynolds with questions at ljr@uic.edu. To be properly registered, students must enroll in one Lecture-Discussion and one Practice. Art Seminar Lab Fee $70.00 Flat Fee.

Digital Photo: Self-Portraits Under this mask is another mask ~ This class begins with the proposal that artworks are intercessors between the inner world of thoughts and feelings, and the outer world of materials. Students will use photographic self portraiture to explore and problematize representation - does it reveal the essential self? is it a necessarily fictionalizing process? does it create a new, yet authentic self? Is there even such a thing as an essential self? We will work with a variety of exercises, from performance to selfies to writing, that will take us off the beaten path of how were used to creating and understanding self portraits. Students will be asked to question the death of the author by looking at the intertextual relationships between art, life, and intentionality, and sit with the strange meetings that occur at the membrane between the real and unreal. By pulling back and considering how they choose to image themselves, students will come away from the course with a better self-conscious understanding of themselves as artists. Photo Lab Fee $100.00 Flat Fee.

Experimental Analog Film This course provides an introduction to different aspects of 16mm filmmaking, covering the Bolex camera, camera-less techniques, hand-processing, telecine and basic projection skills. While its often said that celluloid film is dead or a medium of the past, it is still very much alive with a thriving artistic output in the present. With slower processes to image-making than its digital counterpart, analog filmmaking can elicit a relationship with the filmed subject open to memory, association, and transformation. These aspects of the medium have been highlighted by the work of experimental filmmakers, using it in personal yet radical explorations of their perception and engagement with the world. While the class will work primarily as a technical workshop, it will also engage the films and writings of filmmakers who have expanded the medium and continue to do so. Moving Image Lab Fee $150.00 Flat Fee.

Mix it up: Conceptual Collage This is an analogue making course: which means that students will produce work that is presented, in its final form, as objects (drawing, assemblages, collage, physical presences). Works made in this class are not meant to be presented on a screen. The materiality of drawing and mixed-media is central. Collage is not just cutting and pasting. It is about what comes together inventively in the mix. In the age of digital media, what does it mean to mix-it-up, by hand? What does it mean to make manually, a mixed-mediums works beyond the Instagram digital cut/paste/clone? For a large part of the semester, students will work on translating conventional graphite drawings into works made from fabric and thread, and into other physical materials. Drawing from observation will play a significant role is research. Making, sensing, and thinking are central to this course: a course in which the practice of drawing is used expansively (from observational to conceptual, from textile to mixed media). This is not an in-depth techniques course. It is, instead, an invitation for students to explore, analyze and make work again and again. Through making, sensing, and thinking, technique gets better, and ideas are refreshed. Restricted to Art Education or Pre-Art Education or Art major(s) or minor(s). Taking its name from Hans Belting's book of the same title, Face and Mask invites students to examine the role of the face in human communication and visual representation at large. Pleasure Theft A close and intimate look at art, consumption & capitalism Proposal for graduate seminar Iris Bernblum In this course we will be looking closely at the role pleasure plays both inside and outside the studio. What happens on the road from the impulse to create to the professionalization of art in our contemporary context? How do we hold on to our pleasure? How do we move work out of the studio and into the public sphere when, in our capitalist system, we are inundated with the idea that our success and personal value is defined by our market value? Is the making of art entirely at odds with the business of art? If so, how do we reconcile this? What role does the education of art have within this system? We will be thinking about and exploring the ways in which capitalism increasingly attempts to commodify pleasure and how this affects both our personal art practices and the way we consume. Taking a wide view on what drives us, what scares us, what dares us to go farther, and what makes us second guess ourselves as working artists, I want this class to be a real dialogue between the students and me, exploring the importance of pleasure and play in the studio. The class will examine a wide range of artists, focusing on the trajectories their careers, including studio visits with artists both in person and over Zoom. Finally, we will be reading texts from psychology and philosophy related to the ideas of flow, pleasure and happiness. Art Seminar Lab Fee $40.00 Flat Fee.

This course takes aesthetic and political approaches to study the Illinois carceral landscape. Through theoretical readings, engaged research, and participatory interviews, we will consider the daily lives of people under the most extreme forms of carceral control, including people with life sentences on the inside, and people subject to housing banishment laws and public conviction registries on the outside. This consideration includes sensory experiences, movements, schedules, visibility, stigma, and sense of time passing. We will learn about the structure of the prison and police administrations: the paramilitary structure, the bureaucracy, and the labor dynamics. We will examine the social and political relations between law enforcement, prisons, legislators, advocates, family members, people in custody, free people, and the systems of classification and identification used by each. We will discover how these factors construct public understandings of the carceral state, and how that bears on public policy. This interdisciplinary course is designed for students of public policy, sociology, social work, political science, criminology, architecture and art. No prerequisites required.
