Gods, heroes, and monsters...the classical myths of the ancient Mediterranean world are timeless stories that continue to inspire and entertain children and adults alike and have spawned the likes of Disneys "Hercules", Brad Pitts Achilles in "Troy", and Rick Riordans "Percy Jackson" series. This course is a deep dive into the original sourcesincluding works by Hesiod and Homer, the "Homeric Hymns", and representative works of artand an intensive study of the historical, cultural, and religious contexts in which these stories developed. The course will study how scholars understand and explain mythology, and it will engage deeply with contemporary interpretations and receptions of the classical myths, such as Luis Alfaros "Mojada" and Madeline Millers "Circe". Although every culture in the ancient world had its own mythological traditions, the focus in this course will be those of the Greeks. This course fulfills the Understanding Individual and Society and/or Understanding the Past general education categories, and it is cross-listed as CL 208.

Islam &Challenges of Modernity "Islam and the Challenges of Modernity" -- Muslims have understood and responded to modernity in a variety of ways, spanning from the late colonial period down to our contemporary moment. This course examines the thought of major Muslim intellectual figures in this time period alongside social, religious, and political movements in their encounter and response to modernity. Some of the themes we will explore include: What is modernity and is it neutral? Is Islam inside/outside of, or before/after modernity? Is Islam to be preserved or reformed in light of modernity? Do the challenges of modernity uniquely apply to Islam?
