Topic in Photo:Burden of Proof This studio course concerns strategies for photographing subjects that are without optical specificity---entities and places that have parameters that are not entirely framed by physical markers but by psychologically, experientially, culturally, or spiritually recognized characteristics. To what degree is it possible to photograph a life-changing experience or cultural psychology? What about a lie? God? Sound? These are examples of guiding questions that will be investigated through texts, discussions, analysis of related practices, assignments, and an 8-week project. The course defines photography as, the recording of light, and supports students in acting out that definition through traditional and non-traditional processes.Previously listed as AD 267. Intro to Performance Art This course offers a practical overview of forms and concepts for performance art. Performance art is an evolving field that blurs distinctions between artistic and social categories; appropriating forms from visual and performing arts, cinema and other media, political action, and practices of daily life. Pleasure Theft In this course we will be looking closely at the role pleasure plays both inside and outside the studio. What happens on the road from the impulse to create to the professionalization of art in our contemporary context? How do we hold on to our pleasure? How do we move work out of the studio and into the public sphere when, in our capitalist system, we are inundated with the idea that our success and personal value is defined by our market value? Is the making of art entirely at odds with the business of art? If so, how do we reconcile this? What role does the education of art have within this system? We will be thinking about and exploring the ways in which capitalism increasingly attempts to commodify pleasure and how this affects both our personal art practices and the way we consume. Taking a wide view on what drives us, what scares us, what dares us to go farther, and what makes us second guess ourselves as working artists, I want this class to be a real dialogue between the students and me, exploring the importance of pleasure and play in the studio. The class will examine a wide range of artists, focusing on the trajectories their careers, including studio visits with artists both in person and over Zoom. Finally, we will be reading texts from psychology and philosophy related to the ideas of flow, pleasure and happiness. Restricted to Art Education or Pre-Art Education or Art major(s) or minor(s). Adv Photo: ALTERNATIVE PROCESS This class is a collaboration between the Greenhouse and the Photography Department at UIC. We will explore photo-sensitive properties of plants and vegetables. We will use plants to make Photographs, so called chlorophyll printing working with leaves, Anthotypes, a process utilizing light sensitive plant juice and cyanotype. The goal is to plant our own materials, compost and invest in the photosensitive process, environmental studies and art making. Such alternative photographic processes are friendly to the environment, they demand slowness and the suspension of human time. We will foster awareness of our environment, our relationship to plants, water, soil, light and image making. We will also make our own paper with plants. The interaction with plants, the necessary care and the vital scientific questions behind the natural processes, like photosynthesis, encompass contemporary approaches to our world. We will pay attention to light as photographys most important ingredient and light as energy producing source in plants. How do pigments absorb light energy, how is their light sensitivity and how is this related to printing and taking/making an image? Exploring alternative processes in this context seems a much needed response to - and reflection of the many problems related to climate change and will help students to understand visualities and their ideological impact in a very immediate and sustainable way.Course Information: Field trips required at a nominal fee. Art and Afro-pessimism In the past decade, the most exciting and generative advance in black critical theory, which is to say critical theory, is the announcement and enactment of Afro-pessimism it is the beauty of Afro-pessimism that allows and compels one to move past that contradictory impulse to affirm in the interest of negation and begin to consider what nothing is, not from its own standpoint or from any standpoint but from the absoluteness of its generative dispersion Fred Moten Over the past 6 years, I have just begun to scrape the surface of the relationship between Afro-pessimisms proposition that blackness has the potential to end the world and the capacity/ contextual framework through which an artwork is produced. Initially through the writings of the theorist and poet Fred Moten and also by way of Saidiya Hartman, Jared Sexton, Frank B Wilderson III, Christina Sharpe, Hortense Spillers, Octavia Butler, N.K. Jemison, Zadie Smith among others, I have been contemplating what has the potential to emerge from the absence of subjectivity. I have often referred to an image of a bubble that defines the limits of perceptual cognition as an analog to the artists attempt to produce something that comes from the other side of that boundary, or what has the potential to emerge from the unknown (the ultimate/ only radical act). In this seminar, we will read and discuss ideas of Afro-pessimism as a starting point to think about the emergence of artworks, starting with Fred Motens essay Blackness and Nothingness (Mysticism in the Flesh) as a jumping-off point to think about the generative possibilities of nothingness. We will also look at examples in artists (included but not limited to Adrian Piper, David Hammons, Charles Gaines, Torkwase Dyson, Harold Mendez, Theaster Gates, Benjamin Patterson) through the lens of Afro-pessimism in order to define the operative terms of this blur (as Moten refers to it in Black and Blurr). Course Information: Previously listed as AD 502. Must be repeated for a minimum of 16 hours. Prerequisites: Graduate standing and consent of the School, graduate faculty committee, and the student's advisor.
