3 hours Coatlicue An in-depth inquiry into one of the most iconic ancient American artworks: an Aztec sculpture depicting a monstrous female figure whose head and hands have been replaced by serpents and whose skirt is woven from further snakes. While we attempt to understand this statue in relation to the Aztec imperial ideology that gave rise to it, we will also be considering the ways the descriptions and interpretations brought to bear on it have reflected the shifting orientations of modern viewers towards the past as well as Coatlicues continuing role as a source of inspiration for modern and contemporary artists and writers.. WHAT WAS ART? As we reflect on the lost modern ideal of art from the post-art-historical perspective of the last 75 years we will try to take Richard Wollheims 1987 burn to heart: Many art-historians, in their scholarly work, make do with a psychology that, if they tried to live their lives by it, would leave them at the end of an ordinary day without lovers, friends, or any insight into how this had come about. What did it mean to think of arta category of things, after all, that was once thought to be of consuming beautylike a friend or lover? We rarely think this way now. Our task will be to ask how it once felt and consider whether Wollheim was right.Course Information: Prerequisite(s): Graduate standing in art history or consent of the instructor.

Haunted S & SE Asia Ghosts, spirits, apparitions: how might these powerful figments of the imagination function as methodological tools for examining political, social, and cultural concepts and contestations? Drawing on hauntological approaches, we will consider how spectral presences evoke unresolved pasts, marginalized communities that refuse to be erased, or the crisis of climate change. This seminar will investigate some of the earliest images of spirit deities and ghosts in ancient South and Southeast Asian art, cursed objects from colonial India, and haunted havelis. We will pay special attention to filmic images of the unruly dead.
