Reading selections from Dantes Divine Comedy, we will learn about the history and culture of the medieval Mediterranean world. While Dantes poetic vision of the afterlife offers a panorama of the medieval world, many of the issues confronting him and his age are important to us today: social justice, the relationship between church and state, personal and civic responsibility, governmental accountability, and literary and artistic influences. Otherness ITAL Culture&Society "Otherness in Italian Culture and Society" This course approaches 20th and 21st century Italian culture and society by focusing on otherness. The main goal of the course is to challenge traditional accounts of Italian history and culture, and to offer and discuss a variety of perspectives on pivotal events and phenomena.
