"Antigone and her Afterlives" This course offers in-depth analysis of the figure of Antigone, the daughter/sister of Oedipus in Greek mythology, who attempts to secure burial rites for her brother who had been banished from the kingdom of Thebes. Antigone, as represented by Sophocles and Euripides, is a passionate and politically engaged character who is willing to break the citys law with an eye to a higher divine law. An early representative of female action, Antigone brings to light a variety of modern concerns: the place of mourning in civil society, the limits of the law, discourses of the other, structures of kinship, the political power of family, the ethics of love, and the limitations of the state. Close analysis of works by Sophocles and Euripides will be followed by discussion of some of Antigones many modern afterlives (in seminal works by G.W. Hegel, Jacques Lacan, Jean Cocteau, R.W. Fassbinder, and Judith Butler). A reluctant heroine in Greek tragedy, Antigone remains a figure of fascination in a post-Enlightenment world both as a representative of progress and as a figure outside of time. Same as CL 297. Prerequisite(s): CL 102; or consent of the instructor.

"Cinematic Afterlives of the Russian Novel" Same as MOVI 331 and RUSS 321. Russian literature of the 19th century might feel like a distant and impenetrable cultural artifact, but its echoes can be found everywhere in our contemporary moment. The pages of these great novels are filled with disaffected fanatics, institutional decay, and moral quandaries that are remarkably familiar and vexing to us now. Indeed, we have much more in common with this distant mirror than we might think. To make the 19th Russian century novel relevant for citizens and thinkers of the 21st, our course will examine the afterlives of Russian literature in contemporary cinema. In addition to learning the history and development of the Russian novel (as well as how to read these texts), we will discuss and contrast how these works continue to influence stories and ideas that remain popular and influential in world cinema. In doing so, we will strengthen our skills of textual and cinematic analysis by paying close attention to the concepts of adaptation, medium specificity, and intertextuality. Taught in English.

"Serial Storytelling and Disability in German-Speaking and Anglo-American Contexts". Same as GER 318. The first part of the course offers a historical overview of the emergence and development of serial storytelling in the German-speaking and Anglo-American context. We will examine important stages of serial storytelling such as penny dreadfuls, a 19th-century British publishing phenomenon, or the soap opera on American radio in the 20th century. However, it is only in time-based media and especially in television series that serial storytelling acquires its outstanding importance. That is why we will focus on selected television series in the second part of the course. Particular attention will be paid to the category of disability and, accordingly, to the research perspective of Disability Studies. How are disabled characters represented on screen? How does the portrayal of disability differ in German and Anglo-American productions? What is the significance of disability for the plot? What role do clichs and stereotypes play? Do we encounter innovative perspectives on disability or are we confronted with the reproduction of traditional views of disabled bodies? These and related questions will guide our discussions. Taught in English.

3 hours Nabokov and the Nabokovian. Same as RUSS 460. After his exile to the United States, accomplished Russian writer Vladimir Nabokov switched to writing in English and ended up producing two of the finest novels of the twentieth century, "Lolita" and "Pale Fire". Reading a representative selection of Nabokovs Russian and English-language works, we will attempt to arrive at a fuller understanding of how cultural synthesis inspires artistic creation. Issues we will consider include the relationship between art and politics, aesthetics and ethics, authorship and tradition, memory and exile, identity and sexuality, and the nature of fiction. We will also learn about the cultural impact of Nabokov's art in America, Russia, and the world at large, and trace familiar elements in some contemporary novels (e.g., by Julian Barnes, Orhan Pamuk, and W.G. Sebald) that have been defined as Nabokovian by critics, scholars, and other readers. 3 undergraduate hours. 4 graduate hours. Restricted to Undergrad - Chicago.
