Topics in Drawing: Do It Again This is an interdisciplinary drawing (production, research, and discussion) course that gives students the opportunity to determine their particular subject matter by means of making a body of work in the expanded discipline of drawing. Students are expected to have taken ART 112 or equivalent. This is not an introductory course and requires thinking and making beyond the basics. During the semester, students will be prompted to establish what is the IT in do it again. Sometimes the most difficult aspect of making art one can figure out what to say as well as how to say it: THESE ARE NOT SEPARATE. THE WHAT AND THE HOW GO HAND IN HAND. This will be an important focus of the course. Assignments, readings, field trips and all required research will assist each class participant in producing a body of work that answers to both technical proficiency and conceptual persuasiveness. Some of the questions explored in class are: How repetition is beneficial? How does repetition lead to both the honing of skills and the honing of accidents that come about through experimentation? How again is more? What are some of the historical lineages of repetition in the arts? When does repetition become redundant or a habituated? What is a body of work for the short term and for the long term? Can a body of work be comprised of drawings, sculptures, paintings, etc.? Or does it have to be only one thing? Art production is central to this course in which the practice of drawing is used expansively (from observational to conceptual, from textile to mixed media). This is not an in-depth techniques course, but, rather, an invitation for students to explore, analyze and produce again and again. Only this way technical aptitude and ideas can be honed. Reading and focus and dedication both in and outside of class time are requirements. Studio Arts Lab Fee $55.00 Flat Fee.

Topics in Art: Prof. Practice Thank you for being an artist. There is not one single way to be an artist. The professionalization of art is one reality that is useful to understand. While it is not the only path, this course will touch upon standard professional issues. We will discuss and study and learn from artists and curators (our guests) about how they arrived at their respective artistic platforms. We will also discuss methods for making a sustainable art practice achievable from a practical standpoint. We will touch upon several practical fundamentals that include: the artists statement; how to talk about and lecture about your work publicly (your midterm); how you might network and also create community; what are your short-term and long-term goals and how you keep them in mind as you encounter challenges (everyone encounters challenges); how do you make time when there is so much competing for your time (you have to be stubborn and disciplined); how do you define your goals? How do you use your organizational skills to find work? What professional digital presence do you have? These are methods that only you can put into practice. And the plan is to start to improve on these methods in this class. Integrity is a concept we will also explore, interrogate, and discuss. One of the meanings of the word integrity is the state of being whole. How can you cultivate the wholeness of you (your being, your cultural heritage, your voice, your wellness, etc.) so that you fully flourish? Integrity, in this sense of its meaning, is a challenge when we face so much fragmentation. Restricted to Pre-Art Education or Art Education or Art major(s) or minor(s). Art Seminar Lab Fee $55.00 Flat Fee.

Education and the MFA Degree This seminar-style course examines the history and practice of visual arts instruction from the early modern era to the present, with a concentration on the development and use of the studio MFA degree as training and credentialization for visual arts educators. The goal of the course is to equip studio MFA candidates with a toolbox of "professional practices, emphasizing community-oriented and experimental approaches, that might inform their future work in the visual arts. Whenever possible, the class uses resources that are part of graduate students immediate community, including an extended engagement with UICs Center for the Advancement of Teaching Excellence and a number of non-university educational programs. The course is divided into three sections: Histories and Theories, Institutions and Roles, and Collaborations. After a brief survey of historical models of arts education (from the European academy system to 21st century international MFA programs) the class dives into deep readings of key theoretical texts on radical pedagogy. Then, it moves on to case studies of, and site visits to, innovative arts educators in Chicago. The focus here is on sustainable creative, educational, and professional practices. The course concludes with a series of workshops where students engage directly with educators from CAPE (Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education), gaining a detailed understanding of the development and implementation of inquiry-driven teaching artists projects in Chicago Public Schools. Art Seminar Lab Fee $40.00 Flat Fee.

Archives and Counter-archives The archival turn following the interventions of Postcolonial and Subaltern Studies in the early 1980s opened up radical possibilities for generating counterhegemonic social and cultural histories. This new critical gaze toward the archives became a getaway for many scholars and artists to uncover, recover and examine the histories of groups that were marginalized or erased within the colonial, imperial, and nationalist grand narratives and their institutional archives. This graduate seminar examines how power structures have historically shaped the production, constitution, and ownership of the archives. It also investigates different counter-archival practices that seek to unsettle and undo the colonial forms of storytelling, and excavate the fragments of the past within hegemonic records and institutions. Students will engage with key literature and artistic projects that have explored some of the issues, dilemmas, and concepts around archival practices ranging from gaps and absences in the archival records to how power relations scaffold the evidentiary status of the archives in challenging and unique ways. They will also consider what constitutes an archive and what are the challenges of producing, gathering, and interpreting archival records and institutional sources examining everything from state and colonial archives, to family and vernacular photography practices, news and media archives, oral histories, and urban sites and monuments. More broady, this seminar aims to introduce students to conceptual and analytical interventions that seek to foster new visual counterpublics, with a special emphasis on the intersection of visual and archival practices and their connection to wider debates about the politics of historical visibility. Art Seminar Lab Fee $40.00 Flat Fee.
