Experience "the Glory that was Greece!" Visit the Palace of King Minos, legendary home of the bloodthirsty Minotaur. Tour the Parthenon, most perfect of all Greek temples. Examine Greek vases for tantalizing glimpses of daily life and the world of Greek myth. Explore the range of Greek sculpture from the sublime works of the High Classical Period to the surprising and sometimes brutal diversity of Hellenistic sculpture -- highlights include a beat-up boxer and a sexy Aphrodite who is more than a match for a randy Pan. The course is a survey of ancient Greek art and architecture in its historical and cultural context, from the Bronze Age through the Hellenistic Period. No prerequisites. Same as CL 204, and HIST 204. Taught in English.

3 hours Envisioning History in S. Asia How has the history of South Asia been envisioned through a range of art formssculpture, prints, films, performances, and spectacles? Might such modes of visual expression be understood to impart affective historical knowledge or are they largely in service of the ideological agendas of their makers? Can we overcome text-bound assumptions about the construction of history to unpack the role of visual and material culture in shaping, archiving, and obscuring the past? Although not dedicated solely to film, this course will include close readings of a selection of historical films from South Asia and a consideration of broader film studies scholarship on the historical film as a genre. Prior knowledge of South Asian art history is desirable but not required; all highly motivated students are welcome! Restricted to Undergrad - Chicago.
