"Everything you wanted to know about Spanish but were afraid to ask." Do you speak Spanish at home? Have you studied Spanish for many years? If that is the case, you may have had some moments when you have asked an instructor or a Spanish speaker a question about some quirky aspect of Spanish that received an answer that left you with more questions. In this course, we will provide answers for those questions by exploring the sounds of Spanish and their properties, the way in which meaning is conveyed, and the way in which words and sentences are formed. We will also look at how Spanish is used by different speech communities in different contexts as well as how it is learned by children and adults. Course Information: Prerequisite(s): Credit or concurrent registration in SPAN 202.

This course provides an overview of some of the major developments in European cinema from the post-World War II period to the present. Europe is the home of the art film, and we will analyze this category by looking at various manifestations of this genre from a variety of European nations. The art film initially arose as a reaction to the hegemony of Hollywood after the war; European film industries attempted to support their own national cinemas that often rejected the commercialism and genre formulas of Hollywood films. Post-war European film reflects a complex love-hate relationship with American film, and this will become clear through an examination of the techniques of citation and parody used by European directors. We will learn about major film movements including Italian Neorealism, the French New Wave, New German Cinema, Dogme 95, the cinemas of Eastern Europe before and after the fall of the Iron Curtain, and transnational European cinema. Students will utilize film terminology to analyze individual films that are then situated within their particular historical and cultural contexts. Course Information: Same as GER 207 and LCSL 207. Prerequisite(s): ENGL 160.

3 hours "Modernisms and Their Discontents: Latin American Modernisms in Context ( with comparative references to Modernist Writings in North American literature)" This graduate/undergraduate seminar explores some of the central figures as well lesser known voices in Latin American literature and North American narratives from 1888, the publication of Azul by Rubn Daro to the Luisa Valenzuela's stories Aqu pasan cosas raras (Strange Things Happen Here). On the Latin American side we will read largely short narratives, poems and essays that reflect the various movements and moods of much of the 29th century: the short-lived modernista movement, the various 'ismos' of the vanguard years (creacionismo, ultrasmo, surrealismo, realismo psicolgico o revolucionario, and the dark and light(er) side of the Latin American Boom in the 1960's and 70s. For comparison and contrast, we will read works from these same decades in US literature, including essays, poems and short stories (or novel fragments) from authors often grouped under the labels High Modernism, The Lost Generation, the Harlem Renaissance, the Beat Generation, Southern Women Writers and the experimental novels of the 1960s and early 70's. Among the topics to be considered are the tensions between poetry and politics in Latin America, uneven modernities within Latin America, regional vs. cosmopolitan writers, modernism and gothic tendencies in women writers, the Spanish Civil War on Latin American vanguard poetry and of the World war(s) on American high modernism, the emergence of ethnic and queer voices south and north of the equator. Most of the readings are available in English and Spanish, but some are available only in the original (and students will be invited to try their own translations in these cases). Graduate students will pair literary readings with essays by Latin American and North American authors on modernisms and modernity, comparative approaches to modernism, and the practice and perils of literary translation. Course Information: 3 undergraduate hours. 4 graduate hours. May be repeated if topics vary. Prerequisite(s): Junior standing or above and completion of two 300-level courses in Spanish literature; or consent of the instructor. Restricted to Undergrad - Chicago.

"Illness beyond Metaphors: Latin American Culture and its Medical Discourses" Latin American letters have often invoked illness metaphors. The nineteenth century, in particular, in the midst of the growing pains of the new republics, was very prolific in the kind of discourse that compared the nation to the body and used these comparisons and the need to keep the body healthy and clean to promote social and economic politics. During the last decades of the 20th century, dictatorships frequently used the images of cancer or gangrene to justify the mass assassination of their opponents: a part of the body needed to be cut off to save the life of the patient. Important literary studies, such as those published in the late 1990s by Gabriela Nouzeille and Jorge Salessi opened the field to an in-depth analysis of how literary and political discourse about health reflected the ideological frames of the nation. There are, however, other ways in which Latin American writers deal with notions of health and infirmity, from memoirs by doctors and patients, to the cross-cultural perspective needed in diverse communities, to poetry and fiction produced as a way to process ones own illness. This seminar will analyze a variety of discourses around illness and health and the ways they test the limits of the conception of the individual, the community, and the nation. Course Information: May be repeated up to 1 time(s). May be taught in English or Spanish.
