This course provides an introduction to three intersecting fields in linguistics that focus on meaning and the construction, transmission and interpretation of meaning: semantics, pragmatics and discourse. The course is structured around three modules. The first module focuses on semantics: those aspects of meaning that are linguistically coded. The second module focuses on pragmatics: those aspects of meaning that derive from context and interpretation of intention. The third module focuses on discourse: those aspects of meaning that derive from convention of discourse such as how narratives and dialogues are structured. Students will be guided to think critically of the intersections and fluid boundaries between these fields and learn how to process natural language data for research. This course is required for students in the Computer Science and Linguistics major and is approved for selective credits in the Linguistics Minor. It additionally fulfills the Writing-in-the-Discipline requirement. Course Information: Prerequisite(s): LING 150; or consent of the instructor.

Vocabulary in Action "Vocabulary in Action: How do we learn, process, and use words as multilinguals?" As adults we use vocabulary to express ideas in a nuanced way. We use some words only with friends, others only in formal settings, some words when we write emails and others when we write term papers. Native speakers of English know how to interpret the weather forecast if they hear it is going to rain like cats and dogs and Chicagoans are not talking about substance abuse when they text I am on LSD (Lake Shore Drive). Nobody is surprised when we say we ride a bike, ride on the bus, ride the El, pay for a cab ride, yet translating these expressions literally into other languages can sound funny. In this course we will discuss what it means to know a word, how many word families one needs to know to read a popular text, and how many in an academic setting. We will look at theories that help us understand how learners of another language can efficiently learn thousands of words. During the course of the semester students will learn to use multiple research tools, such as frequency lists, concordances, and corpora.
