"The Rancho in HIstory, Culture and Nostalgia" The year 2021 marks the 500th anniversary of the introduction of Spanish cattle into Mexico. Old World cattle, along with the horse, another Spanish introduction, were instrumental in the colonizing and economic development of the New World--nowhere more so than in the northern Mexican provinces. For centuries the rancho has endured as dwelling and commercial enterprise, but it is also a symbol and idea that anchors borderlands Mexican identity and popular culture. This course explores the history and culture of ranching in northern Mexico and the American Southwest, while investigating how things ranchero continue to inform Mexican and Mexican American identity and culture--from the banalities of ranch work, the politics of land tenure, and representations in music, moving image, and visual culture. Course materials and assignments draw on classic and new historiography on the rancho; online historical archives like The Bexar Archives and The Texas General Land Office Archives; folklore; material culture collections; and popular culture. Authors include: Andres Tijerina, J. Frank Dobie, Charles A. Harris III, Americo Paredes, Omar Valerio, Jovita Gonzalez, Joe. S. Graham, Charles Ramirez-Berg, Jos Alfredo Jimenez, Phoebe Kropp, and Laura Esquivel.
