Poetics of Multiculturalism: Literature from Germany and Africa. As our world is increasingly characterized by a conglomeration of diverse cultures, languages, and religions and as extensive migrations in particular contribute to intensified global interactions, modern German and African fictions more than ever before feature plurivocal narratives of multiculturalism. These narratives are distinguished by a refusal to oversimplify cultural and social phenomena and seek to represent the complexity of postmodern identities, to stimulate in readers an openness to pluralism, to foster the perception and accommodation of differences, and to counter tendencies of exclusion. In this course, we will read literary texts from Africa and Germany and examine narrative strategies used to represent connections and kinships between cultures.
