3 hours The Corporatization of K16 Education In the past 40 years K16 education has been subject to radical restructuring driven by profit motives and ideology. This restructuring has been based on the model of the corporation and markets. It has imagined public schools and universities as businesses, school districts and higher education as a market (and sometimes a stock portfolio), students and parents as consumers, administrators as CEOs, faculty as workers in need of discipline, and knowledge as a deliverable commodity. It has aimed to harness schools and universities to the imperatives of corporate profit and economic growth while transforming the purpose of education from humanistic or public ends to economic ones. This course will take up the corporatization of K12 and higher education considering the politics of urban education in a structural and systemic fashion that looks to how broader economic, cultural, and political forces and struggles inform this movement. It investigates how corporatization has driven the major educational policy initiatives, organization reforms, and the cultures of schools in K16.The course examines who is promoting and who is challenging the corporatization of K16 education including lobbyists, philanthropists, unions, businesses, politicians, think tanks, surpra-national organizations, and social movements. It studies the broader interests, politics, values, assumptions, and ideologies behind the corporatization of education.Consequently, this course considers the politics of urban education expansively to include cultural politics, political economy, the politics of race, the politics of the city, the body, globalization, new technology, impacts on curriculum and pedagogy. Restricted to Undergrad - Chicago.

4 hours Fishbowl Education: Nurturing People and Science Learning with Desktop Ecosystems - This asynchronistic online course is designed for educators and any person interested in exploring science in a creative manner. We will build, monitor, and explore simple fishbowls, which are plant focused mini-ecosystems, requiring little equipment, cost, or care. They can be built anywhere, by any age schoolchild, providing teachers both a fun classroom and/or remote learning tool. An interdisciplinary science curriculum has been developed, which students will tailor to serve their needs, as the lessons in chemistry, biology, and ecology found in these mini-ecosystems can serve any grade level. The fishbowls allow teacher and student to learn through joint exploration. Nurturing these fishbowls develops empathy and curiosity, not only enhancing their educational value, but also allowing them to provide emotional support in various settings, whether a kindergarten, nursing home, or family home. They are recommended for the homebound or any individual needing to reconnect with nature on a small scale. Drawing on a range of arts, this course offers science learning in an engaging manner adaptable to all. Nonstudents may register as a graduate student at large/non-degree student, before August, at https://admissions.uic.edu/graduate-professional/requirements-deadlines/non-degree-study Online
