3 hours Sixties Art and the PMC A chance to study the foundations of the aesthetic choices most contemporary artists have deployed since the 1960s: Pop, minimalism, and conceptual art. We will consider what Sixties artists and critics thought was new and critical in their work, but also look through the lens of social class and ask whether Sixties art gave form to values now associated with the anti-democratic neoliberal order of the late-20th century. Sixties art was a global phenomenon made by people of all skin colors, and our case studies will reflect those facts. Readings will be drawn from art history and from analyses of the professional managerial class (PMC). Restricted to Undergrad - Chicago.

3 hours Ephemeral art: Latin America Ephemeral art in colonial Latin America This seminar examines ephemeral artartworks designed to exist for a limited timein colonial Latin America. It aims to provide a critical platform for addressing methodological issues in the study of ephemeral art and the role of archival institutions in preserving such artworks. We will explore impermanent art forms, such as triumphal arches, to understand how artists and multi-ethnic communities used transience as an artistic and political strategy to engage with issues of power, extractivism, and identity. Given the enduring relevance of these themes, we will also engage with contemporary practices of ephemeral art. Restricted to Undergrad - Chicago.

Marxism and Art This is an old topic with a vast literature that once againunder pressure from recent historical eventsis in need of new research. We will take a deep dive into key terms of Marxist analysisclass, class consciousness, slavery and wage slavery, ideology, autonomy, historical materialism, political economy, dialectic, mediation, etcbefore turning to art. Art will be understood both as a massive global industry and an indigenous laboratory for aesthetic form. Our goal will be to square these two levels in a common critical understanding for our moment, a task that will require us to (re-)disentangle art from our prevailing ideology of culture.
